Trendy colors, new hair, lots of sparkle: 10 must-see looks of the 2016 Grammys

By Libby Allnatt

If you watched the Grammys on Monday night, you know that Taylor Swift scored several trophies (again) and made an acceptance speech that was tooootally NOT directed at Kanye West or anything. Lady Gaga honored the late David Bowie with a lot of glitter and a jam-packed mashup tribute. And as always, the red carpet was packed to the brim with gowns and glamour galore.

Here are 10 of the night’s standout looks.

At first glance, I was very perplexed about Swift’s Atelier Versace outfit. The color combo is unconventional. The high slit was very Angelina Jolie-esque. I was taken aback by the presence of a crop top on the red carpet. But after mulling it over, these things are what make the ensemble interesting. The fiery orange-red and the deep Barbie pink are perfect post-Valentine’s Day hues, the slit is daring and unexpected, and the crop top is edgy and rule-breaking (not to mention Taylor’s total #FitnessGoals abs.) Bonus points for the perfect match between her lipstick and top.

Bombshell much?! Gomez looked like a gorgeous glam mermaid in her shimmering indigo Calvin Klein dress complete with side cutouts. With her voluminous curls, it looks like she’s taking some tips from her Victoria’s Secret Angel friends.

If you’re tilting your head wondering how Gaga can walk in those platforms, I feel ya. (The term “platforms” feels like an understatement!) But it’s nothing the pop icon can’t handle. With her hair looking like it could provide your daily dose of vitamin C and the embellished broad-shouldered Marc Jacobs get-up, the star was tastefully and glamorously committed to her tribute to David Bowie. Unrelated: Currently adding blue eye shadow to my CVS shopping list.

Ariana Grande

This crimson red Romona Kevaza gown was classic Grande. The bold monochromatic color and simple silhouette made it sophisticated, while the bustier top and itsy-bitsy buttons at the bodice kept it cheekily adorable. The high-shine silver accessories and fluttery lashes made her look like an old-school movie star, making it both elegant and cool for a Grammy red carpet.

Ellie Goulding

Goulding’s pastel Stella McCartney gown was my personal favorite look of the night, mostly on account of the trendy blush hue. Is it lavender? Is it pink? Who cares! It’s delightfully feminine. The embellished silver back was reminiscent of the 1920s, giving the delicate look some jazz. Ballerina in the front, flapper in the back.

Meghan Trainor

This is mostly here because the characteristically blonde Trainor is now BRUNETTE?! How did I not get this memo? Anyway, now you know. I would have suggested a different color ensemble to really make the new locks pop (like something pastel or bright), but the long-sleeved black gown resembled a dark night sky and kept the brunette tresses understated… which is kind of cooler.

Zendaya

Zendaya did her own makeup for the red carpet, which already makes me throw my hands up in the air with even more evidence that the woman is flawless. She also debuted a new ‘do, rocking a blonde mullet with shaggy eye-dusting bangs. The star played up the androgynous vibe with a relaxed black pantsuit, certifying her badass status. Chic.

Chrissy Teigen & John Legend

In terms of #RelationshipGoals, Teigen and Legend still are the couple everyone loves to swoon over and Instagram-stalk. Teigen’s crisp white Yousef Al-Jasmi dress glided over her cute baby bump, and the embellished cape kept the look fresh and only enhanced the gown’s elegance. I also kind of love the contrast of Legend’s black Gucci suit. Can these two do no wrong? (Hint: no.)

Tori Kelly

Black, white, and bright hues are pretty typical on the red carpet. That’s what makes Kelly’s jade green Gauri and Nainika gown so fresh and unexpected. The fabric looks luxuriously smooth, and the one-shoulder strap and long train upped the glam factor even more. I will definitely be looking to incorporate more of this color into my wardrobe (probably not in gown form, though).

Beyonce

Where was Beyonce during all of this? Floating in a sheer white collared gown as she stepped out to present the Record of the Year award (which was “Uptown Funk,” by the way). The woman sure knows how to make a (surprise) entrance. What’s even cooler? The angelic dress is from Inbal Dror’s bridal collection! That’s right, Bey wore a wedding dress to the Grammy’s. Put me on that wait list, please?
