With Halloween just right around the corner, spooky season is sadly coming to an end. But before that, here is a list of 10 Halloween specials to help soak in the remaining scary spirit.
10. Parks and Recreation
Kicking off our list is “Halloween Surprise” the fifth episode from the fifth season of Parks and Rec. Ron takes Andy along to trick or treating with his girlfriend’s daughters since she has to leave to attend to some kids that were caught defecating on the soccer field. Back at town hall, things take a turn for the worse when Leslie and Ann try to scare Jerry and end up giving him a flatulence-filled heart attack. If you haven’t seen this show in a few years, this episode would absolutely be one to revisit.
9. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
While almost every episode would be a spooky perfect-fit, the seventh episode of the second season appropriately titled “Halloween,” brings a nightmare to life when the cast transforms into the literal version of their Halloween costumes — the Scooby-Doo gang.
8. Freaks and Geeks
When this iconic cult classic was canceled after only one season, it became one of the greatest travesties in television history, in my opinion. But in those 22 episodes, they were able to fit in one of the best Halloween specials of all time. The episode “Tricks and Treats” raises the age-old question, when are you too old to go trick or treating?
7. The Simpsons
With 27 Halloween specials under The Simpson’s belt, one of them was bound to end up on this list. With so many to choose from I decided to go with “Treehouse of Horror V” where the Simpsons are no stranger to parody. In this special, the show puts their spin on Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining.
6. Family Guy
For me, Family Guy is one of those shows adored by almost anyone that has seen an episode. In “Halloween on Spooner Street,” Stewie sees all the neighborhood kids dressed up for Halloween and mistakes them for crusaders of the apocalypse. Brian then teaches Stewie about trick or treating and takes him to go for the first time. After a group of bullies steals Stewie’s candy, him and Brian go on a hunt for revenge.
5. How I Met Your Mother
“The Slutty Pumpkin” lands right in the middle of the pack. Ted Mosbey, the Architect, goes to the same Halloween party every year with his friend Barney. Each time, he hopes to find the girl that got away, the one dressed as a provocative pumpkin five years prior.
4. SpongeBob Squarepants
If you don’t have a soft spot for Spongebob you’re lying to yourself. In “Scaredy Pants,” Spongebob tries to rid his reputation as Spongebob Scaredy Pants, by trying to pick out a scary costume. His attempts to be frightening still come up quite short. After deforming himself to make his ghost costume more realistic, Spongebob heads to the Krusty Krab to show off his new costume.
3. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody
If you grew up in the 2000s, you definitely saw this one coming, and you probably thought I was going to have this episode ranked at the top spot, but that would just be too easy. “The Ghost in Suite 613,” is a classic and if you haven’t seen it in a while, get ready for a wave of nostalgia to come crashing down on you. It will make you wish it was 2005 all over again.
2. Curb Your Enthusiasm
The episode “Trick Or Treat” captures Larry David’s stubborn essence perfectly as he refuses to give out Halloween candy to two teenager’s not wearing costumes, which eventually results in them vandalizing his house.
1. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Landing at the top spot on this list is “Who Got Dee Pregnant.” In my opinion, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is cleverly written sitcoms and with its 14th season, it ties the record for the longest-running sitcom in television history. When Dee tells the gang that one of them is the father of her child, they try to recollect the events of a Halloween party where all of them were too drunk to actually remember what happened.
