The Phoenix Film Festival (PFF) will be premiering nearly 200 films from March 31 to April 10 at the Harkins Scottsdale 101.
The festival will feature both new and seasoned filmmakers from across the world.
“We get around 750 different film entries from around the world,” said PFF Executive Director Jason Carney. “From those 750, we end up with nearly 200 that we showcase at the festival. Really supporting those filmmakers and giving them an opportunity to be seen is a big deal for us.”
The festival will spotlight various communities of Arizona, including the Asian American Pacific Islander and LGBTQ+ communities. “Rush: Jackson He” by Drake Presto highlights Chinese-born Jackson and his contributions to college football, while “LA Queencieñera” by Pedro Peira focuses on an undocumented transgender Latina’s 50th birthday celebration.
PFF will also have Native American, African American, Latinx and local community spotlights.
During PFF will be the AZ Student Film Festival, which features films from high school students across Arizona. Some high schools featured are Catalina Foothill High School in Tucson and Chaparral High School in Scottsdale.
The International Horror and Sci-Fi Festival will also happen in conjunction with PFF. This festival focuses on movies and shorts of the sci-fi and horror genre.
One particular movie that will premiere is “CRABS!,” where a horde of murderous horseshoe crabs attack a California town during prom night.
Throughout the film festivals, there will also be challenges and competitions that filmmakers will be participating in.
“We’re educating new filmmakers and filmmakers that are professional, giving them opportunities. We do film challenges for those filmmakers,” said Carney. “That’s a good way for the local film community to get more involved and get their films out there.”
The PFF has been named one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals by MovieMaker Magazine, and over 27,000 participants have attended in past years.
