If you plan to travel this holiday season, it is important that you pack light to avoid checked bag fees and long security lines. Although it is nearly impossible to pack light, it is possible to pack your favorite outfits and accessories without having to check a bag. Just bring the essentials and things that can easily be layered or mixed and matched.
The Clothes
It is essential to pack only the necessities and maybe a few of your favorite pieces. If you are traveling for a more casual trip you may only need to bring a coat, three to four tops, a couple pairs of jeans and comfy shoes. These all can be interchanged to create a variety of outfits. If you plan on dressing up at all you should bring a dress, pair of heels or wedges, blazer, blouse, dress pants, and pencil skirt. Blazers are very versatile; you could wear it with the dress, skirt or dress pants. You can also wear the blouse with any bottoms and even make it casual with a pair of jeans and flats.
Shoes
Shoes are a must for almost every girl, but when it comes to traveling you really only need to bring two pairs, one for day and one for night. Shoes are probably the heaviest item you can pack and they can really add up in weight if you are trying to stay under the 50 pound weight limit. I recommend bringing a pair of neutral flats or flat boots, depending on the weather, for the day time because they match everything and are super comfortable. For night, I would bring black pumps because you can never really go wrong with them.
Accessories
As for accessories, you do not need too many as they tend to take up space. All you really need is a statement necklace, a basic pair of earrings like diamond studs, and a cuff bracelet or small bangles. When packing accessories, it is important to never pack your pricy jewels in a checked bag if you plan on bringing them. Always keep your valuables in your carry-on luggage! I made the mistake of packing a family ring in my checked bag. Needless to say, I haven’t seen it sense.
Makeup and Toiletries
Just like packing your accessories, you only need to bring your most important makeup and toiletries. With the 3-1-1 liquids rule (3 ounces or less, 1 zip-lock bag, 1 per person) it can be very difficult to pack everything you want. I usually pack my foundation, concealer, eye liner, mascara, cover-up, and a few neutral eye shadow shades. It can be helpful to invest in one travel perfume to keep with you instead of bringing the fancy bottle.
Packing light can be a little stressful for the fashionable girl, but it can be done. Traveling with fewer bags makes check-in, security and the trip almost stress free. Just remember to bring the important things and you will be good to go.
