ASU Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising’s Fashion, Popular Music and Film students had the opportunity to go on a three-day weekend trip to Los Angeles to experience all the FIDM campus and the city had to offer. My name is Luna and I’m a fashion design major that got to go on this LA trip.
After the seven-hour bus ride, I was happy to set foot on the beautiful ASU FIDM campus in Los Angeles. The campus included the ASU FIDM museum with vintage and historic fashion pieces and a lovely little park outside the building. The hallways of the building displayed past students’ designs. The campus is also very close to LA’s fashion district, Broad Museum, Disney Concert Music Hall, and more.Â
The first day in California was all about touring the ASU FIDM Museum, the only fashion museum in LA. It was a smaller space, but had many designs displayed from famous designers throughout the years, such as Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and Dior. Students were able to walk through the museum and take a close look at the intricate embroidery, delicate lace, and sparkling sequins on the many vintage designs. As fashion students, our itinerary involved a lot of trips to museums, fabric stores, and the fashion district.Â
The second day was packed, as it was our first and only full day there. We started with breakfast at the student lounge. This was a great way to talk and get to know each other. We began by touring the FIDM fashion library. It was filled with amazing free resources for the students, and it even included a collection of vintage Vogue books dating back to the 1930s.Â
After the library, we took a trip to Mood Fabrics. The collection of different fabrics there was quite amazing and had endless possibilities. They had every type of fabric imaginable, pink leather, metallic organza, chainmail, french tulle, and so much more.
We soon after walked to the fashion district to continue exploring the many fabric shops that LA has to offer. One of them included Blue Moon Fabrics, and the selection was unique. They specialize in activewear fabrics with many different colors and textures. They even had a special curtained-off section of the store with glow-in-the-dark fabrics. I loved seeing all of the options that were available at these different stores.Â

We ended the day by going to the Dover Street Market, a high-end designer brands store that carried clothing and accessories from Jacquemus, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu and more. We walked around the store and looked at the quality in which the garments were made and how the displays were set up.Â
The next morning, everyone met at FIDM once again before we went off on our activities for the day. Starting off, we got the chance to go to the Broad Museum with a viewing of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Room. Kusama is a famous Japanese contemporary artist and is known for her brightly colored artworks involving polka dots and her many installation pieces. It was almost magical looking, as we stood in a dark room with many small colorful lights reflecting off of the mirrors. It looked like we were surrounded by hundreds of bright twinkling stars.Â
After the viewing, we were free to explore the museum and all of its artwork for our final activity before we got on the bus to head back home. I enjoyed seeing the artwork of many famous artists in person. The Broad Museum also had a Pop Art section that included well-known artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, which I thought was really interesting to see.Â
Overall, I really enjoyed this trip to Los Angeles and the FIDM campus. It was a great opportunity to use the unique resources available to my benefit and be inspired by all that I was able to explore. I thought it was really beautiful how this campus is dedicated to giving all of these fashion students the best resources possible to aid them in their career paths. This trip really showed me what it looks like to have professional, innovative, and creative ideas come to life.
