Fall is everybody’s favorite season. It’s the season of scarves and flannel blankets, changing leaves and, most importantly, pumpkin spice everything. We can finally pull out the sweaters from the back of our closets and cozy up in scarves to brace the Phoenix winds. But what are we to do with all of our summer favorites?
It is highly unrealistic (and very realistically expensive) to buy a whole new wardrobe for the colder months to come, and because we fashionistas are wardrobe geniuses, we find loopholes. The secret to not spending money on an entire new wardrobe is perfecting the art of flawless transitioning. I took to my Polyvore account (@daniella-rudoy) to demonstrate just a few of these transitions. You take your favorite summer pieces, and with a little fall style staples and pumpkin spice fairy dust, you emerge with beautiful transitioned outfits that will have all the leaves falling in envy.
Your Favorite Sundress
We all have that one perfect sundress we refuse to get rid of, right? The flirty, flowy one that fits like a glove? Paired with your favorite sandals, it was your go-to summer outfit, and now it can now be your favorite fall outfit as well. Swap out the sandals for some brown ankle boots, throw on a green army jacket or cardigan, and you’re set! If you’re feeling extra daring, throw on a wide-rimmed hat to complete the look.
Your Striped T-Shirt Dress
This always-chic summer staple sky-rocketed on the trend charts this year, so it’s no surprise that we would want to keep it in our closets. You wore it with sandals, with sneakers, on top of a bathing suit – I mean, let’s be real; was there a time you weren’t wearing a striped t-shirt dress this summer? Throw on a tan coat, knee-high socks, a bright scarf and boots, and your outfit is complete. (Added bonus: How cute would this look with a Starbucks cup?!)
Your High-Waisted Denim Moto Shorts
Another piece we saw a lot of this past summer was the high-waisted denim moto short. They flew off the shelves at powerhouses like American Apparel and made guest appearances on everybody’s Instagram feeds. We wore them with a bikini top, or with a tank and flip flops, or maybe even a flirty crop top, like in the photo set above. “How do we transition shorts to a fall outfit?” you ask? Very easily! Add a dark-colored tank underneath a warm, tweed coat and a pair of badass boots to complete your look.
Your Body-Con Skirt
Perhaps one of the more versatile pieces in your closet is a body-con skirt, especially if it’s denim like the one pictured here. Dressed up or down, this skirt did you good this summer. You might have worn it with a colorful blouse and matching heels for a sunny date night, but it’s time to fall-ify it. The blouse gets turned in for a thin, tan sweater layered underneath an army green jacket, and the heels get swapped for equally adorable lace up boots. (Note: Squirrel not included.)
Everybody loves summer for the endless sunshine and the cute, sun-kissed outfits it lets us wear, but let’s not forget how adorable we look bundled up with a warm coffee mug in our hands. Don’t be so quick to toss out your summer favorites for the changing seasons! Let these simple transitions pave the way to your fall outfit bliss, because looking cute in the cold is a piece of cake — or a piece of pumpkin pie.
