Fashion at the 2021 VMAs

Whether it’s Lady Gaga in a meat dress, Miley Cyrus in a bear leotard, or Katy Perry paying tribute to Britney Spears in an all-denim dress, MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) is no stranger to outlandish looks. Unlike a lot of the red carpets at award shows, it’s pretty normal for people to dress flashy and eccentric on the VMAs red carpet.

Lil Nas X is just one of the many celebrities who went all out for the event. He’s been known to wear outlandish outfits in music videos, Instagram posts, and award shows such as his bright pink cowboy inspired suit he wore to the 2020 Grammys. This year for the VMAs he did not disappoint. Lil Nas X wore a custom lilac suit by Versace covered in small crystals, which was accompanied by a train that extended out from the side.

Country singer Kacey Musgraves also isn’t afraid to go all out on the red carpet, and she’s proved that with many of her past looks. One of her most memorable looks is her pink tulle dress that she wore to the Oscars in 2019. Her 2021 VMAs look was definitely up to par. She walked the red carpet in a purple Valentino dress, along with a matching purple feathery hat as well as red leather gloves.

As the hostess of the night, it’s only right that she stood out on the red carpet, though she normally does anyway. Doja Cat always wears extraordinary looks for these types of events, and this look was no different. At the Grammys earlier this year, she wore a long feathery yellow dress with black and nude accents. For this award show she opted for a different style. She wore an outfit from Vivienne Westwood which included a black bustier type leotard wrapped with a purple fabric in a toga style. As for her shoes, Doja Cat had on what looked like thigh-high red leather stockings with red, platform, strappy heels.

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) have made some noise with their red carpet looks recently, and I have no doubt that the reaction to both of their looks from the 2021 VMAs will be any different. Back in May she wore a revealing black mesh dress while MGK wore black oversized suit. This time wearing custom Mugler, Fox donned a sheer dress with jewels that were placed in a wavy type of pattern as well as some satin Jimmy Choo heels. Singer MGK wore an all red flashy suit by Dolce & Gabbana with black patent leather shoes.

Artist of the year winner Justin Bieber stood out as well, but not in the sense of being flashy. This isn’t new for him though as he wore a t-shirt with ripped jeans on the red carpet at the American Music Awards in 2015. Though not as casual as the AMAs look, the singer took a different route to standing out this year at the VMAs. In an all Balenciaga look, Bieber wore an oversized hoodie underneath an oversized coat, along with baggy jeans.

YouTuber and influencer Bretman Rock isn’t new to the VMAs red carpet, and he proved it coming back to the award show this year. In 2017 he wore black jeans and a suit jacket with no shirt. This year’s look was a big step up. He wore a floor length, animal print dress from Roberto Cavalli along with thigh-high leather heeled boots. Not only is the dress beautiful, but the YouTuber paid tribute to the singer Aaliyah, who originally wore the dress to the 2001 VMAs.

Though those were only a few of the many well-dressed celebrities of the night, the VMAs proved once again that outrageous outfits are always welcomed. The MTV VMAs have come a long way since meat dresses and bear leotards, but that doesn’t mean it won’t still showcase some of the most bizarre but fashionable looks. If this year seemed extravagant, it shows that it’s bound to get better as each year passes.
