Oscar Wilde said, “One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art.” After attending my second First Friday–the first Friday evening of each month when downtown Phoenix celebrates art–I’ve learned one can do both. First Friday may be mostly about the art hanging in galleries and museums, but isn’t fashion a form of art on its own? Walking around, it quickly becomes apparent that fashion is everywhere, and each of us adheres to our own style.

I took this image of the Warhol girls when the Phoenix Art Museum celebrated the unveiling of their Andy Warhol exhibit at the first First Friday I attended. Although Warhol’s collection wasn’t in the Phoenix Art Museum’s fashion gallery–which is on the second floor, for future reference–it didn’t stop the art from being turned into fashion. This September’s First Friday wasn’t too concerned with clothing because the latest unveiling was focused on early Spanish art. However, just like the Warhol girls’ clothing was based upon Warhol’s art, I looked around and found a couple pieces we could all gain inspiration from.

If these aren’t your everyday looks, that’s perfect! They’re not outlandish, but they are bold. As the school year is just getting started, there’s no better time to test new waters or step into someone else’s shoes. Wear your version of an art-inspired outfit when you attend your next First Friday. Dressing up in October is nothing out of the ordinary anyway. First Friday is a clash of casual and fancy outfits, featuring tons of personal style. Wear your work of art and take in the art that surrounds you. It’s what First Friday is all about.
