Daniella and Dominique Jagelka, juniors at Estrella Foothills High School, may have to share a large part of their lives together because they are identical twins, but one special thing that separates them is their Colombian couture.
From birth, twins are expected to have matching outfits and mirror each other’s every move and phrase. Unlike many twins, these girls had an individual sense of self as soon as their lives started. Daniella describes her look as “comfortable, stylish,” as she likes to wear whatever is easiest to lounge in while looking cute at the same time. Dominique is on another spectrum by being “complicated.” Her goal each day when she dresses is to “go with something different” and to “try different accessories.” Her favorite trademarks are leggings, leather jackets and her recent fetish, scarves. Overall, Daniella prefers to wear classic and simple pieces while Dominique is the glamour girl.
The Jagelka twins have lived their entire lives being called “Colombian twins” for a reason. Their appearance, although identical, sets them apart from just any other set of twins. Their mother is from Colombia, which allows them to travel there. This means one thing: souvenirs! Instead of typical postcards and magnets, they bring back a piece of the country with the clothes and accessories they wear and share. “Because a lot of the things in Colombia aren’t exactly expensive, the accessories that we bring to the United States we use as gifts so that we are educating our friends and our family and just other people about the culture in Colombia through accessories and adding it to their culture,” Daniella said.
Each time they visit, there is an abundance of leather boots, handbags, clothes and handmade jewelry piled into the extra suitcase they bring specifically for all of their fabulous finds. Dominique loves the designer purses especially. “You can get different handbags that represent the culture. You can look at it and just know there is something different about that [handbag],” Dominique said.
One thing is certain of these two: Just because they look the same certainly does not mean they are the same. They are labeled frequently without being recognized as two people, but once their style catches someone’s eye, the differences between them are obvious.
