Last year’s breakout fall trend was the ombré hair coloring technique, and since its initial debut, the trend has been going strong and has adorned the locks of celebrities including Ciara, Vanessa Hudgens and Lauren Conrad. With ombré slowly making its transition back out, balayage, an older, more classic but similar hair color technique has reemerged to take its place.
What is Ombré?
The ombré hairstyle is characterized by natural hair color at the roots that blends at either at the cheekbones or at the end of the chin into a lighter color. This hair color technique can either blend into a natural blonde like Lauren Conrad’s or a bright fun color like singer Jessie J’s. It works best on shoulder length to super long hair.

What is Balayage?
Balayage is a French hair coloring technique that emerged in the 1970s. It is a freehand highlighting technique defined by strategically placed face-framing highlights that start at the temples and blend to about the shoulder. Celebrities like Jessica Biel and Rashida Jones have been rocking this look. It can be done on pixie length hair to hip length hair, but works best on medium to short hair lengths.

What’s the Difference?
Ombré has a more dramatic effect, while balayage has a more natural effect. Both hair coloring techniques are low maintenance and don’t require a lot of touch ups. The main difference is that balayage is a classic while ombré is more of a trend.
