With the start of the new semester comes the same unavoidable worries on how to stay in shape as a college student while living the life of dining hall food and ramen, and after classes, clubs and homework. This leaves little time to devote to working out or getting a good night’s sleep. Luckily, as a part of an initiative to promote healthy and active Sun Devils, Arizona State University is encouraging its students to participate in a helpful new health push being hosted right across the street from our new fitness complex in Downtown Phoenix.
On Friday, Oct. 18, Arizona State University will be teaming up with the Valley of the Sun YMCA to host the first annual Y Race Fitness Fest right on the Downtown Phoenix campus at Civic Space Park. The Fest will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature free health screenings, fitness and nutrition demonstrations. Additionally, it will be the start of a weekend full of celebration for the upcoming 45th annual Y Race Phoenix, which takes pride in being the oldest road race in the state of Arizona.
Not only does the race provide a good chance to burn some calories, but it’s also an opportunity to sport your cutest running attire and have fun while doing it. The Y Race encourages team registrations, so grab a few friends, pick a theme, and dress things up a little.
Registration for the race, as well as pre-race packet pick-up for those runners who are already registered, will also be available at the Fitness Fest. The race will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20 at South Mountain Park and includes three different races: a half marathon starting at 7 a.m., a 5K run/walk at 7:30, and a 1-mile “fun run,” the start time of which is yet to be announced. Interested runners can register at any point, including the morning of the race, at yracephoenix.com.
