Zendaya Makes History at 67th Annual Emmy Awards

By Caitlin Estes

Zendaya made history this past week at the 67th annual Emmy awards, winning the coveted title of best lead actress for her performance as Rue in HBO’s series “Euphoria.” This moment was particularly special, as the 24-year-old is the youngest to ever win this award.

Euphoria is an HBO show that accompanies a group of high school students in their experiences with drugs, love, identity, trauma, sex, and friendships. The series will be renewed for a second season which was originally set to air in August 2020, but amid the pandemic, it will not be released until 2021. Rumors of bridge episodes have been circulating.

The young actress started her night in a stunning silk taffeta gown in black and purple hues, designed by Christopher John Rogers, with a slicked-back hairstyle, jewelry from Bulgari, and a pair of Christian Louboutin heels.

To accept her award, she wore a custom made two-piece dress designed by Armani Privé, featuring a glimmering bralette top and an elegant polka dot skirt, complemented by a messy bun.

She was originally supposed to wear the acceptance outfit at the Golden Globe Awards this year but ended up not being able to attend because she personally did not receive any nominations. It was considered a snub that she skipped out since “Euphoria” did have a nomination, according to Elle Magazine.

As the awards this year were all virtual, her moment was shared with her closest friends and family at her Los Angeles home.

She beat out a plethora of veteran actresses, including Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Olivia Coleman, and Laura Linney. Comer previously held the title of youngest to win best actress in a drama for her performance in “Killing Eve” in 2019, when she was just 26-years-old.

“Thank you to all of the other incredible women in this category,” Zendaya stated in her acceptance speech. “I admire you so much.”

Zendaya also became the second black woman to ever win this award. The only other being Viola Davis in 2015 for her role in “How To Get Away With Murder.”

She concluded her speech with some inspiring words. “There is hope in the young people out there.”
