A Guide to Dr. Martens: Style Review + Look-book

By Emma Oyen

Doc Marten shoes allow for individual style while also being a streetwear classic.

There are so many styles to choose from which is why the shoes are so loved and versatile! But what if you love them all? Which pair should you choose? What should you wear them with?

Deciding on a style was always a tough decision for me because I wanted to find style, comfort, and versatility all in one! My family and friends always laugh at me because of how serious I take my Docs.

Whether it’s your first pair or whether you’re an experienced Dr. Martens wearer, I made this style review to help find the pair that’s right for you, and a lookbook for some inspiration on how to style your Docs.

It’s time to start rocking your Docs and owning your style!

STYLE #1: Jadon Smooth Leather Platform Boots

My Rating: 9/10

These boots will make any outfit pop!

I love the Jadon boots because they instantly add so much to any outfit and make every look feel bold and put together. They are perfect for so many occasions, like exploring a city, hitting up a festival, going out for brunch, and just catching up with friends! These boots are super stylish and a classic look that will never disappoint. Unlike other styles, they are easy to slip on and off with the side zipper. However, they do take a bit to break in but once you do, they are extremely comfortable. These are the most squeaky pair of Docs I own, which can be bothersome when walking through a quiet room.

STYLE #2: Sinclair Leather Platform Boots

My Rating: 10/10

These boots are my absolute go-to and my all-time favorite Docs.

When you see a pair of big chunky shoes like these, you wouldn’t expect them to go with many outfits. To my surprise, I found that they are the perfect boot year round and match a variety of styles. The leather is super soft and easy to break-in. Scuff and wear marks are hardly noticeable because of the textured and durable leather. Overall, I am in love with the details of this boot including the front zipper, grooved sides, stitching, and eyelets. These Dr. Martens never fail to make me feel powerful, carefree, and ready to take on the day!

STYLE #3: Clarissa II Leather Platform Sandals

My Rating: 9.5/10

These are the perfect statement sandals!

These shoes have become my staple for warm weather and are a must-have for AZ people. They are sturdy and seem as if they will last forever and they can be easily dressed up or down. If you like the big shoe style, these are for you! The platform sole along with the pebbled leather and urban look makes them unlike any sandal I’ve seen before, and adds the perfect dose of attitude to your outfit. The large buckle allows for easy, adjustable wear. However, they are quite heavy shoes, so they are not the best for long days of walking. While they did take a while to break in and gave me minor blisters, after the first few wears they were good to go!

STYLE #4: 1460 Patent Leather Lace Up Boots

My Rating: 7/10

These glossy Docs make for a timeless look with a feminine touch!

I love these boots because they don’t get dirty easily and are super easy to clean. The shiny leather creates a sleek style that pairs well with just about anything! These are less chunky than the other styles I own which makes them super easy to throw on when I’m in a rush. They are also great shoes to pack for a weekend getaway. Surprisingly, these were the worst to break in because patent leather is very stiff and doesn’t want to budge. They made my feet feel achy because they dug into the top of my foot, so don’t expect to wear them for long periods of time when you first purchase them! qa
